The next inauguration

I was out of town and missed Obama’s inauguration. However, if he makes it through the next four years and manages to put in place the kind of painful changes this country requires I will not miss his next. I think one of the reasons Obama has been so successful is that he stands in stark contrast to the collection of phonies and intellectual lightweights currently in Washington. But one skill they do not lack is the politics of personal destruction. There isn’t a single Republican as far as I can tell who is in any way interested in seeing a Democratic President succeed, and last Wednesday was the first day of the 2010 campaign. The only winning strategy is to make the opposition claim victory for the good that comes out of the White House. And that will take leadership, something that’s been in short supply for quite some time.
