Stranger in a not so strange place

Why is it that whenever I visit California, thousands of miles from whatever place I currently find home I find it strangely familiar. Maybe it’s the ubiquitous highways that look like highways everywhere else and separate you from the local cultures. Maybe it’s that is there is no local culture and getting off the highway only takes you to a strip mall that looks like strip malls everywhere else in the country, only bigger. I’ve heard it said that California creates the trends and cultures then exports them to the rest of the country. I think that oversimplifies things. California was created by and looks like the rest of the country, only with a slightly better tan and no pretense of history or culture.

I am reasonably certain that the old California, the California you see around you is finished; it had its day and that day is done. What will replace it I don’t know, but it better be better.
